Head of Business Development & Marketing


The Head of Business Development and Marketing will lead the overall execution of the firm’s marketing strategy through the development and leadership of all external communication and the leadership of business development. The Head of Business Development and Marketing will be responsible for leading, managing and training of the firm’s marketing team and will report to the firm’s partner in charge of sales and marketing.

This is a leadership role on the Hoerr Schaudt team.

Business Development/Lead Screening:

The Head of Business Development and Marketing will serve as a central manager of all business development activity by leading the marketing team who will use the firm’s CRM system (Deltek Vision). The Head of Business Development and Marketing will also lead communications in all the various channels (news, solicitation, websites, subscriptions etc.) Specific tasks include:

  • Planning and overseeing new and existing marketing initiatives
  • Increasing the value of current customers while attracting new ones
  • Developing goals for the company and business growth and ensuring they are met
  • Participate in go/no-go decision-making process
  • Oversee the CRM database
  • Manage all business development tasks to be completed by staff, ensuring timely execution and follow through
  • Support those with marketing assignments to prepare for meetings, interviews, and other contacts with prospective clients, as well as for speaking engagements and other marketing activities
  • Provide and maintain network of industry contacts, i.e., consultants, contractors, architectural colleagues, clients; cultivate leads and gather intelligence through networking
  • Participate in networking and industry-related events and conferences and serve as outward facing representative of the firm

External Communications:

The Head of Business Development and Marketing would be tasked with leading the active outward communication via the firm’s social media channels, website, and email marketing system. Specific ongoing tasks include:

    • Leading the marketing team to ensure regular updates to project and news portions of the firm website
    • Leading the marketing team in the creation and publication of quarterly newsletters and one-off project update emails
    • Social media leadership (Instagram, Facebook)
    • Lead the coordination and execution of project photography
    • Writing of correspondence to clients and other outside parties, as needed
    • Coordination with the firm’s public relations consultant on larger media initiatives

Proposal Management:

The Head of Business Development and Marketing will lead the coordination of the marketing team’s responses to solicitations (RFQs, RFPs, etc.) using a standard template in InDesign. Interview presentations and client presentations preparations will also be led by this role. Specific tasks include:

  • Working with the marketing team, determine appropriate team members for proposal coordination with partners and secure teaming partners for each pursuit
  • Work closely with leadership to determine strategies on proposals and presentations, hands-on planning, and development of strategic customized responses to RFPs and in the interview preparation
  • Supervise marketing team in the layout, editing of all proposal responses
  • Participate in pre-interview planning and presentation rehearsal with design teams and help develop and apply the established win strategy, themes, and discriminators in presentation materials
  • Schedule and lead debrief of project pursuits

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and competencies:

  • Ten or more years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations preferably in the design industry
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Business Development, or related field. Master's is preferred
  • Have a love for content marketing and a passion for developing fresh and creative approaches to conveying information
  • A detailed knowledge of marketing procedures, work processes, and tools, along with evidence of past successful management of marketing projects and teams
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with concurrent deadlines and multiple stakeholders
  • Strong visual and storytelling abilities that would be used to develop marketing collateral and presentations in InDesign and PowerPoint
  • Experience working independently, as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional environment
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision, meeting deadlines and working well under pressure, while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work with both peers and senior members of the firm
  • Proficiency in InDesign and PowerPoint is required; working knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, and database programs such as Deltek Vision is preferable
  • Able to travel to other Hoerr Schaudt offices and/or client project locations as needed
