Did you see anyone participating in Park(ing) Day today, the annual event where participants take over a metered parking space to create a mini-park (or something like it) for a day? It began in San Francisco in 2005 and quickly spread nationwide. By Parking Day 2010 there were 850 documented parks in 183 cities, across 30 countries and six continents.

The spaces are quirky and fun and are designed to remind people about the importance of green space (and the need for fewer cars) in urban areas. Check out the Smithsonian’s article on it or see if anyone in your city has uploaded their pix to the Park(ing) Day website.
