As one of landscape architect Dan Kiley’s former mentees, I am thrilled to see The Cultural Landscape Foundation identify him as a visionary Modernist landscape architect in its upcoming retrospective, which opens on November 14, 2013 at Boston Architectural College.
One of my favorite Dan Kiley quotes is, “Design is a joyful discovery.” Kiley’s approach to design is an inspiration far beyond the reaches of landscape architecture. He was fortunate to live life on his own terms and didn’t separate his life from his work – something every artist dreams of doing.
I identified the South Garden of the Art Institute of Chicago as one of my all-time favorite Dan Kiley landscapes in a recent article and it’s one of the best ways I can think of to be in touch with the essence of his work. Kiley’s commitment to treading lightly by designing what is appropriate for a site means that his work feels elicited and drawn out of its surroundings instead of imposed.
