Experienced Interior/Exterior Designer (Residential Focus) - Chicago

About the Role 

We are seeking an experienced, creative, and motivated Interior/Exterior Designer to support high-end residential projects. This role is ideal for a designer with a strong understanding of how architecture and outdoor environments come together to create cohesive, livable spaces. You will collaborate with landscape architects, architects, contractors, and homeowners to deliver beautifully integrated designs from concept through installation.

Your work will help define how our clients experience comfort, beauty, and nature every day. You will work with existing Hoerr Schaudt clients in collaboration with internal design project teams. 

As part of the growth of this position, this role will also be expected to bring new clients to the firm. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Design & Concept Development 

  • Create exterior design concepts that complement landscape architecture plans for residential properties for HS projects and individual clients.
  • Develop space plans, detailed drawings, elevations, material palettes, and 3D renderings in collaboration with HS project teams.
  • Design outdoor furniture and fixtures for use on patios, pool areas, outdoor kitchens. Create lighting plans, and related exterior elements. Designer will work with HS project teams to collaborate on overall style and vibe in the space,
  • Ensure exterior furnishing design solutions support the architectural style of the home and site conditions. 

Client Collaboration 

  • Lead homeowner consultations to establish project goals, lifestyle needs, and aesthetic direction.
  • Present concepts, material selections, and final design packages clearly and professionally.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with clients to manage expectations and ensure satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle. 

Project Coordination 

  • Work closely with landscape architects to integrate exterior design elements seamlessly into site plans.
  • Collaborate with architects, builders, millworkers, and specialty contractors to ensure accurate design execution.
  • Conduct site visits during design, construction, and installation phases. 

Material & Product Sourcing 

  • Source exterior materials, fixtures, finishes, furnishings, and custom elements appropriate for residential use and environmental conditions.
  • Prepare detailed specifications and manage vendor relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Summerfield Trading team on purchasing furniture and other needed accessories. 

Technical Skills 

  • Produce high-quality drawings and renderings using AutoCAD, SketchUp, InDesign or comparable tools. Work will be in collaboration with Design Teams.
  • Utilize Adobe Creative Suite for client presentations and design documentation.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of residential construction practices and design standards. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in residential interior/exterior design; experience working alongside landscape architecture teams is a strong plus.
  • Strong portfolio showing integrated indoor/outdoor residential projects.
  • Knowledge of materials suited for outdoor environments and a variety of climates/regions.
  • Excellent communication, client presentation, and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with local permitting and construction processes; professional certifications (NCIDQ, LEED, or state licensure) are desirable but not required.

Additional Information:  

  • Work Environment: Monday through Friday 8:30-5:30 with an hour for lunch/breaks.

  • Salary: Range is $90,000-110,000; the offer will be based on experience, skills, and background in similar positions.  

Physical requirements of the role:  

  • Lifting, Carrying and Moving: Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving up to 20 lbs. or more of materials onsite or to/from the site and in the office. Specifically, during layouts, lifting, carrying, and moving can be large parts of the workday. 
  • Mobility: Frequent visits to jobsites require being outdoors for extended periods from time-to-time in variable site conditions. 
  • Working conditions: Our clients’ projects are across the USA, and therefore this position requires the ability to work outdoors frequently at jobsites in all weather conditions and throughout all seasons: sun, rain, ice, snow, etc., depending on location. 
  • Protective Gear: Requirement to wear clothing for the expected site and weather conditions.
