June 16th, 2025 - We are honored to be featured in Ocean Home Magazine's June/July issue. that includes our project Windswept Garden in a 5-page spread. In this article, our senior partner Doug Hoerr and partner Nick Fobes share insights about how this charming project in Newport, Rhode Island emerged and evolved over time.
The historic country estate was transformed after Hoerr Schaudt was originally hired to update the pool exclusively, but expanded the project into a restoration of four acres. The design created multiple outdoor "rooms" for enjoyment and exploration, including a walled perennial flower and vegetable garden with distinctive white fencing, formal areas with lilac tree standards, and an enhanced pool pavilion. Hoerr Schaudt maintained the property's agrarian country estate character while adding contemporary elements, using an existing fieldstone wall to divide the property and realigning the driveway to showcase more of the historic home's facade. The homeowners now enjoy a sophisticated garden with distinct areas that each serve different purposes while still expressing "a similar identity," allowing them to experience and interact with every part of their landscape daily.
