Growing up in Nebraska, Matthew was surrounded by the beauty of the Great Plain’s native landscape. He has always been captivated by the environmental and cultural significance of the prairie’s ecological networks. During his time in Midwest, he witnessed a lack of variation and investment in public open space—especially in lower-income communities. This observation sparked his commitment to ecologically resilient and socially equitable site design that promotes inclusion and mixing, and the importance of community processes to inform design decisions.

Additionally, his passion for how newly migrated cultural groups perceive, influence, and relate to public space has propelled his commitment to community parks through research, volunteering, and practice. It’s been Matthew’s mission to design and build civic spaces that are vibrant and contextually representative of adjacent environments and voices, and are sensitive, welcoming, and adaptable to cultural and economic change.

In his spare time, Matthew finds solace in exploring the great outdoors—hiking, gardening, and camping top his list of favorite activities. He also keeps busy restoring his 1909 shirtwaist house in Kansas City, collecting Danish and Midcentury furniture, and spending time with his husband and their Aussie-doodle, Bella.
