The overall visioning and master plan process for the 6.5-acre site started in 2023 to re-envision its vacant landscape into a civic space that embodies accessibility, ecological stewardship, and community-building. The park is a pioneering model of inclusive design, ensuring people of all abilities can engage with nature, play, and sensory experiences. By addressing historical inequities, restoring ecological integrity, and fostering strong community connections, East Side Park will serve as a vibrant, sustainable public space that prioritizes both social and environmental resilience.

The vision plan embraces an evolving narrative for the park, shifting the paradigm from deeply rooted site issues to a place that fosters inclusion, restoration, connectivity, and activation. The park’s design confronts historical inequities, transforming a space once defined by segregation and environmental degradation into a vibrant, accessible, and ecologically resilient civic space.

Guided by eight core design principles, the park’s design transforms a site marked by segregation and environmental degradation into a thriving civic space. Over 5,000 feet of wheelchair-accessible trails will weave through wetlands, prairies, meadows, savannas, and woodlands, offering immersive educational and sensory experiences. Learning hubs will promote interpretation, discovery, and delight, reinforcing the park’s commitment to accessibility and engagement.

From Segregated to Inclusive

Once home to a segregated community pool, the site’s redesign reclaims this past by centering inclusivity and accessibility. Thoughtfully designed pathways ensure that individuals with mobility challenges can experience Alabama’s varied landscapes, an opportunity often limited in mountainous terrains. Extensive community collaboration has shaped the park’s development, ensuring it serves Birmingham’s diverse residents.

From Disturbed to Regenerated

Historically impacted by mining, industry, and neglect, the site has suffered from invasive species and environmental degradation. The park’s restoration strategy prioritizes ecological resilience, featuring native plant communities that reflect Alabama’s biodiversity. As a living laboratory, it will demonstrate regenerative landscapes and sustainable land management, fostering environmental stewardship for future generations.

From Fragmented to Connected

Previously disinvested and disconnected, East Side Park will authentically serve its surrounding neighborhoods. The planning process has included neighborhood work sessions, preference surveys, accessibility reviews, and interactive open houses. A dedicated group of ten local accessibility-focused non-profit partners have provided critical insight into amenities, programming, and design alternatives, ensuring the park reflects community priorities.

From Void to Activated

After 30 years of vacancy, the site will come alive with activity, learning, and recreation. Visitors will enjoy low-impact walking trails, a sensory meadow, edible permaculture installations, birding opportunities, and an expansive, inclusive nature playgarden. Immersive learning and sensory hubs will foster curiosity, engagement, and discovery for all ages and abilities.

East Side Park demonstrates the power of design to heal, restore, and connect—transforming a historically segregated and ecologically degraded site into an inclusive, resilient civic space. By embracing accessibility, ecological restoration, and deep community engagement, this project sets a new standard for public parks that welcome all. Through thoughtful design and meaningful programming, East Side Park will leave a lasting legacy, illustrating how landscape architecture can bridge past injustices while fostering a more connected and equitable future.
