Set along the waterfront in Newport, Rhode Island, On the Rocks reimagines an existing coastal estate as a complete outdoor living destination centered around summer entertaining and multigenerational gathering. The project was driven by the clients’ desire to invest in the outdoor experience while preserving the property’s close relationship to the water.

The design transformed the existing pool and terrace into a contemporary waterfront environment that balances refined outdoor living with the rugged character of the New England coast. A sleek infinity-edge pool anchors the composition, with a custom plaster color calibrated to reflect the tones of Narragansett Bay.

The project embraced a horticentric design approach, using planting as both atmosphere and architecture. Early planning focused on shaping space through layered vegetation, screening, and shade before refining hardscape and structural elements. The resulting outdoor room functions as a “home without windows,” featuring dual fireplaces, a full kitchen, dining and lounge spaces, and a louvered pergola designed to support extended outdoor use throughout the season.

Extreme coastal exposure heavily influenced the material and planting palette. Salt spray, wind, harsh winters, and exposed bedrock required resilient, site-adapted plantings including Rosa rugosa, Juniper, Hydrangea, Rose of Sharon, and Honey Locust. Reclaimed granite slab stairs and stonework were selected to integrate with the site’s existing ledge and historic character while improving circulation between terraces, lawn areas, and the shoreline.

The completed landscape transforms the property into a self-contained coastal retreat where family and guests can gather, dine, swim, and experience the waterfront in a setting that feels both timeless and contemporary - a modern interpretation of Newport summer living rooted in landscape, hospitality, and place.
